The first Legacy Circle Members Luncheon is a success!

Posted by: Rob Roehm    in Events

On June 8, 2007, the first ever Legacy Circle Members Luncheon was held near Brownwood, Texas at the Star of Texas Bed & Breakfast. It was a beautiful day, with a few clouds and mild temperatures, just right for an outdoor event in the wonderful gardens of Star of Texas which were done up in Texas motif. A hot Texas barbeque with all the fixin’s was served, along with cold drinks, and apple cobbler for dessert. We were fortunate to be joined by Greg Manchess, artist for Del Rey’s The Conquering Sword of Conan. Everyone enjoyed the company, as well as the birds, the butterflies, and the battleaxes on display (Don, the owner of the B&B, made them!). Afterwards, Rusty Burke gave a short talk on the history of Lake Brownwood (just over the hill) and the related REH story “Wild Water”. The event then closed with the LC members receiving a package of goodies, including the first ever REHF Newsletter, a chapbook titled Rhymes of Texas and the Old West, a copy of an original typescript of an unpublished early draft of “Wild Water”, and their 2007 REHF lapel pins.

A couple pictures taken at the event are shown below. Here’s hoping next year’s REH Days Legacy Circle event is twice is big! How to become a Legacy Circle member? See here.

Collected Letters Vol. 1 Now Available

Posted by: Rob Roehm    in News

The REH Foundation is proud to present The Collected Letters of Robert E. Howard. This three-volume, limited-edition series collects all the known letters written by REH. The collection will include dozens of previously unpublished letters and hundreds of poems not found in any other collection.

HP Lovecraft to Robert Barlow, March 14, 1933:
“Some of the long argumentative & descriptive letters of our group really approach literature — the most remarkable ones coming from Robert E. Howard, whose reminiscences & historical sketches of his native Texas country are literature in the truest sense of the word; far more so than any save the very best of his stories.”

The Collected Letters of Robert E. Howard reveals a side of Howard’s personality that readers of his fiction might not suspect existed. Full of humor, philosophical musings, travelogue, historical sketches, and opinions on contemporary politics and events – local, national, and international – Howard’s letters provide important insight into the life and times of one of the most influential pulp-era writers of the twentieth century.

This three-volume set collects more than 330 letters, from the early ones to his Texas friends, most notably Tevis Clyde Smith, and continuing through correspondence with fellow writers Clark Ashton Smith, E. Hoffmann Price, and others. Also included are Howard’s letters to H. P. Lovecraft, which constitute one of the most intriguing correspondence cycles in the history of Fantasy fiction.

Each volume will be printed in hardback with dust jacket, in a limited quantity of 300 copies, and will be individually numbered. Cover design and artwork is by Jim & Ruth Keegan.
