Membership Benefits

   Posted by: Rob Roehm

As Legacy Circle members already know, membership has its benefits. At this year’s Howard Days, not only did they enjoy a meal and fellowship at Jean’s Feedbarn (who says there’s no such thing as a free lunch), they also received a membership pin and a copy of The Hyborian Age. This limited edition chapbook contains Howard’s important essay, as well as the three, never before published drafts leading up to it. Hyborian scholars are having a field day.

Legacy Circle and Friends of REH members also received the latest Foundation Newsletter. This issue contains the first complete publication of Howard’s 1925 gag letter to Tevis Clyde Smith and an early draft of “Nekht Semerkeht”; both are copies of Howard’s actual typescripts. There’s also a News section, and a photocopy of Doctor Howard’s inscription from one of the books in the Robert E. Howard Memorial Collection at Howard Payne Library in Brownwood.

Finally, all of our members—Legacy Circle, Friend of REH, and Supporting—are enjoying their 10% discount on the REHF Press’ latest releases: The Collected Letters of Doctor Isaac M. Howard and School Days in the Post Oaks. And we’ve got several more items in the pipeline, including the forthcoming Spicy Adventures.

It’s not too late to receive these benefits. Sign up today and you’ll receive the goodies for that membership level. This offer is good for the rest of the year, but don’t delay—join today!

Another good thing about attending Howard Days is that fans get first crack at new releases. Foundation treasurer Paul Herman unveiled a new issue of The Howard Collector on Saturday. There are still a few copies left, and Paul provides ordering details below:

That’s right, after 28 years of quiet, THE HOWARD COLLECTOR, the first and greatest REH journal, has returned. Started by Glenn Lord in 1961, THC served as a venue for REH studies, and set the standard for REH periodicals. Collecting rare and previously unpublished REH stories, poems and letters, along with book reviews, and interesting historical information from REH’s friends and associates, THC was uniquely situated to provide the best of everything. Glenn acquired the famed Trunk of lost materials, and he served as the literary agent for the REH heirs for more than 30 years. Glenn also tracked down and visited with several of REH’s friends, and accordingly gaining access to even more material. AND finally, Glenn is the kind of person who crafts a book with class, subtlety, and care, to create a book without silly flash, just great meat on them bones.

THC ran for 18 issues, ending in 1973, as Glenn got too busy with the business of REH to deal with cranking out a fanzine. Those original 18 issues are now highly collectable, and contain all sorts of rare and interesting REH works and discussion. Go check them out on eBay, sometime, and see the prices these fetch.

Glenn has been retired from the world of REH for more than a decade now. But Dennis McHaney had the idea of seeing if Glenn would be interested in doing another issue in his spare time. A group of us chatted with Glenn, and he decided to do it. With the kind permission of Paradox, and the efforts of a few friends (including Rob Roehm), the latest issue is now available. A LOT of research and work went into trying to properly match fonts, styles, paper, etc. Contents include an introduction by Glenn Lord, a previously unpublished REH poem, a previously unpublished REH drawing, a previously unpublished Breck Elkins fragment, and the infamous first draft of “Black Canaan”, the one that REH said the editors “cut the guts out of”. The guts are back in. And finally some book reviews by the great Fred Blosser.

The print run is limited to 200 copies total. The book is a fat 52 pages, and sells for $20. As Glenn has better things to do, I’m handling the shipping. Shipping in the US is $3 First Class, $6 Priority. Insurance is $2. For non-US destinations, please contact me at piherman@yahoo.com. Checks or money orders can be sent to:

Paul Herman
PO Box 250526
Plano, TX 75025

or PayPal to godzilladude@sbcglobal.net. Profits go to Glenn.

Note this book was debuted and on sale for a couple hours in Cross Plains, and that sold about a third of them, without many folks even getting to see it. When they are gone they are gone.

Two New Titles to Debut at Howard Days

   Posted by: Rob Roehm

The wait is just about over. We’ve made arrangements with Project Pride to have both The Collected Letters of Doctor Isaac M. Howard and School Days: Cross Plains and Brownwood in the 1920s for sale at the Howard House gift shop during Howard Days. Supplies will be limited, but the books will be available to our members and through our Lulu store a few days after the event.

“So Far the Poet . . .” now available

   Posted by: Rob Roehm

Tevis Clyde Smith is one of the central figures in the biography of Robert E. Howard. The two met at Brownwood High School in 1923 and were soon writing stories together. When Howard returned to Cross Plains, the pair began exchanging letters and visiting each other’s homes. They both contributed to The Tattler, the Daniel Baker Collegian, and The Junto. Because Smith saved the letters Howard wrote to him, we have a much better picture of Howard the man than we might otherwise. In later years, Smith penned several biographical essays about his old friend and began work on a full-blown biography—sadly, never finished.

The Robert E. Howard Foundation is pleased to present “So Far the Poet . . .” and Other Writings, by Tevis Clyde Smith. This collection contains all of the known pieces that Smith wrote about Howard, contributed to Howard fan publications, or co-authored with Howard. It also contains many of the pieces Smith wrote while Howard was still alive, items from The Tattler, Daniel Baker Collegian, The Junto, Dallas Morning News (one including a reference to Howard), contributions to Truett Vinson’s Lone Scout publication, The Toreador, and the few surviving letters from Smith to Howard, several presented here for the first time. Snippets from Howard’s correspondence and quotes from Post Oaks and Sand Roughs, Howard’s semi-autobiographical novel, are provided to give context.

This is a print-on-demand book–not a numbered collector’s edition–with an Introduction by Rusty Burke, cover design by Jim Keegan, and edited by Rusty Burke and Rob Roehm.

The Brownwood Connection

   Posted by: Rob Roehm

Just in time for Howard Days, the Robert E. Howard Foundation is proud to present The Brownwood Connection: A Guide for Robert E. Howard Fans.

The Central Texas town of Brownwood has changed a lot since Robert E. Howard’s time, but traces of the 1920s and ’30s can still be found, if you know where to look. The Brownwood Connection not only provides directions to all of the important locations, it also describes Howard’s relationship with the Texas town, from his high school days to his college experiences and beyond. Part biography, part travelogue, this volume explores the remnants of Howard’s home-away-from-home with photos — both modern and period — as well as pictures and scans of pertinent documents: college catalogues, yearbooks, report cards, maps and more. Every detail of Howard’s life in Brownwood is explored, from his trips to Stone’s Ranch to his relationships with his Brownwood friends. Also included are letters written to Howard from his mother, a section on Novalyne Price, items from the Cross Plains Review, and more.

And if that wasn’t enough, The Brownwood Connection also contains the most in-depth look at Howard’s experiences with the railroad ever published. Every known train ride is analyzed, including his trip on the long defunct Brownwood North & South line. This section also includes photos and scans of schedules, depots, and other pertinent data. A small preview of The Brownwood Connection is available at the Lulu Press web page.

The Brownwood Connection is a 107 page (plus viii) paperback with black and white interior and divided into three sections: “Robert E. Howard in Brownwood,” by Rob Roehm; “Robert E. Howard Rides the Rails,” by Rob’s father and partner in crime, Bob Roehm; and four appendices: ”Novalyne Price,” “Documents,” “Cross Plains Review,” and “GPS Coordinates.”

Drawings blogThe Robert E. Howard Foundation is pleased to announce The Collected Drawings of Robert E. Howard. This slim, 42-page volume collects all of the known artwork by our favorite Texan. All of the comics and doodles from his letters and all of the Hyborian Age maps have been collected, but that’s not all. Many previously unpublished maps for stories like “Blood of the Gods” and “Wild Water” have been cleaned up and are presented here for the first time. Also, a fantastic discovery was made in Texas last year: Robert E. Howard’s high school text book. On each of the blank pages within that book, a young Howard doodled characters from his favorite stories in Adventure magazine, 11 characters in all. There was also a loose sheet of paper folded in the book with additional drawings. All are collected here. Order today and, depending on which shipping option is chosen, it might just show up in time for Christmas.

The Collected Drawings is an 8.5 x 11, perfect-bound paperback with an introduction by Bill Cavalier. Prepared for publication by yours truly.

Sentiment: An Olio of Rarer Works

   Posted by: Rob Roehm

Sentiment-covera

UPDATE: Second printing, now available.

The REH Foundation Press is proud to present Sentiment: An Olio of Rarer Works. This volume is the Howard collector’s dream, containing those hard-to-find stories from various small press publications from the 1960s, ’70s, and ’80s. No longer will readers have to seek out copies of Pay Day, Lurid Confessions #1, or The Dark Man #2; all of the Howard content in those volumes, and many more, is included here.

Also included are many items seldom seen by collectors. “The Rivals” makes its first appearance outside of a Foundation Newsletter; all three issues of Howard’s amateur press publication, The Right Hook, are presented in their entirety; and many other hard-to-find pieces have finally found a home in Sentiment. For most of these items, this is their first publication in book form. Many of the pieces in this collection are juvenilia.

This massive volume, close to 600 pages, will be printed in hardback with dust jacket, in a limited quantity of 100 copies, each individually numbered. Cover design by Jim Keegan; edited by Rob Roehm.
